Biography
Melissa Ferrara has worked for the US Department of State as a Special Agent doing protection for the US Secretary of State and visiting foreign dignitaries, as well as was an officer with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for most of her adult life. She has international experience living in Germany, Greece, and Ireland. Working in a high-paced Federal Government environment, as well as with high-performance athletes, she recognized common success factors across both worlds. Excellence in high-pressure situations always came from a centered mindset—one that is clear, grounded, and able to perform at maximum potential. This insight became the foundation of her performance coaching philosophy.
In addition to her full-time role with the CIA, Melissa became a Certified Professional Coach in November 2023, specializing in Performance Coaching for executives, leaders, and athletes. Melissa coached Senior leaders in the CIA in addition to her operational role. She has a proven track record of excellence working in the high-stakes, national security arena as well as coaching senior operations officers tasked with the highest priority global issues. In 2026, Melissa earned her International Coaching Federation, Associate Coaching Certification (ICF ACC).
Melissa Ferrara is in her 5th season with Loudoun Valley High School (4th year as Head Coach). In her first four seasons as Head Coach, she led the Vikings to four appearances in the Virginia State Tournament, including back-to-back Class 4A State Championships and one season as State Championship Runner-Up. As Head Coach, her record is 78-10-1, and she guided the Vikings to 2023 and 2024 MAX Field Hockey Top 20 rankings in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Melissa has been recognized as the 2024 Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year, 2024 VHSL Class 4A State Coach of the Year, 2024 VHSL Region 4D Coach of the Year, 2024 and 2025 Dulles District Coach of the Year, and 2024 LoCo Sports Coach of the Year. She holds a Level 1 USA Field Hockey Coaching Certification and served as a USA Field Hockey Nexus evaluator for three years.
